Roads to Memory طـرق فـي الذاكـرة
(2022) Teak wood 90cm x 90cm x 2.5cm “Roads to Memory” documents the historical neighborhoods of Al Balad and, specifically the four neighborhoods Harat Al Sham, Al Madhloum, Al Yemen and Al Bahr through the “mangour”, the traditional wooden screen that adorns Al Balad’s architectures. It is the result of Khogeer’s attentive study of those areas, their walking paths along with the changes that occurred in the city and in its people over time. Her original “mangour” pieces embody these paths in a way that does not contradict the mangour’s original nature and its unique structure. Each path represents stories, which extend along the length of woodcuts. This work conveys Khogeer’s experimental approach to heritage as she reimagines the development of the historical area of Jeddah. Exhibited at Tamer’s House, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, organized by the Ministry of Culture. “Roads to Memory” aims to consolidate the concept that roads have extended roots and are full of tales and stories.
